Women enrolled in the fabric design course at the Sunrise Center in Zorg-en-Vlygt on the Essequibo Coast have designed and produced 300 yards of printed fabric to meet an order they received from L&M Fashions in the Cayman Islands.

According to the Guyana Foundation, this fabric which is being sent in 3yd lengths will be used to make garments for the Cayman Fashion Week to be held in February 2017.

The fabric bears their logo and names to confirm that the product described as a genuine women’s empowerment effort, was made in Guyana.

The Guyana Foundation expressed gratitude to Kirpalani for their generous donation of the cotton.

The Sunrise Centre, the first of its kind to be established by the Foundation, offers counselling, skills training and support to individuals and families across the Coast. Despite beginning operation in June, the centre was launched at the end of October, 2016.

Dress-making, tie-dye and yoga are also among the free courses open to the public at the facility.

Attendees are routinely invited to complete questionnaires assessing their emotional wellbeing and are informed about the free counselling services offered.

Participants are predominantly aged 25 to 45.
