The Leader of the Opposition wants government to immediately rescind the proposed toll increases for the Demerara Harbour Bridge.

These increases were announced today, Wednesday December 14, 2016, by the Minister within the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, Annette Ferguson during the perusal of the estimates of that Ministry.

A statement from the Office of the Leader of the Opposition, this evening describes the increase as “most cruel, crass and insensitive” adding that “this measure will add to the nearly 200 odd measures, which have been imposed upon the backs of the Guyanese people in the year 2016.”

This, the Opposition Leader’s office says will no doubt “multiply the hardships and sufferings, which the Guyanese population will have to endure in 2017 and beyond.”

The statement also calls out the manner in which the increases were revealed to the public, declaring it as “equally reprehensible” and after intense scrutiny in the Committee of Supply.

In the Opposition Leader’s opinion the government, has “taxed the people of Guyana enough for the year.”
