Green re-elected as City Mayor; Deputy replaced by Councillor Jaikaran

Georgetown Mayor, Patricia Chase-Green was onThursday elected to serve another year in that capacity as she was unopposed at the 2016 Mayoral Elections of the Municipality. However, she will have a new Deputy by her side in the name of another Alliance For Change (AFC) representative, Lionel Jaikaran.

At the stroke of 2pm, the process to elect a mayor and deputy got underway which was guided by the City’s Town Clerk, Royston King.

Before the floor for nomination was opened, two proposals were put forward to the Council as to how the elections would have been done.

Councillor, Oscar Clarke put forward that the voting be done by the show of hands and was supported by 21 of his colleagues for such a process. The other proposal was for Councillors to cast their votes via a secret ballot.

Patricia Chase-Green was the only name thrown before the Council to return as the Mayor of the City which automatically made her the Mayor for another year.

Mayor Chase-Green was then asked to take the chair as she presided over the election process for a Deputy.

Councillors Malcolm Ferreira, Carolyn Caesar and Lionel Jaikaran were the three names nominated for the Deputy Mayor position as Deputy Mayor, Sherod Duncan announced his withdrawal from the race less than an hour before the election.

It was clear by the show of hands that Councillor Jaikaran was favoured by others and seemed fitting to take up that position.

He got 24 votes in his favour, one against and four others abstained.

After a clear victory, the Deputy Mayor Elect was escorted to the right-hand side of the mayor elect’s chair where he will sit from April 1 next year.

Both the Mayor and Deputy elects expressed gratitude for being selected as the leaders of the Council.
