President attends Desmond Hoyte’s 14th Death Anniversary Commemoration Service

President David Granger, this morning (Thursday December 22,2016) attended the 14th Death Anniversary Commemoration Service of former Executive President of Guyana and Leader of the People’s National Congress Reform Hugh Desmond Hoyte held at the Seven Ponds, Botanical Gardens, Georgetown.

The Late Hugh Desmond Hoyte in 1984 became First Vice President and Prime Minister of Guyana.

Mr. Hoyte served as President from 1985 to 1992 and before that he held several Ministerial posts between 1969 and 1984 including Home Affairs, Finance, Works and Communications, and Economic Development.

As a Minister of Government, he held on several occasions, responsibility for African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) affairs under the Lome Convention and was the ACP spokesman on sugar for 1981 to 1983. His portfolio also included Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Affairs.

This morning, members of the People’s National Congress Reform, President David Granger and other officials sang hymns and paid tribute by laying wreaths at the late President’s grave site at the Seven Ponds, Botanical Gardens.

Given the long and close association he has had with the Late Hugh Desmond Hoyte, Foreign Affairs Minister, Carl Greenidge reflected on the type of man he was, noting that he was very serious about the tasks he had to fulfill and expected the same of those who worked closely with and for him.

During the recent opening of the Hugh Desmond Hoyte Library and Museum, The late President was lauded as a formidable force; meticulous, with a demonstrated intolerance for corruption; a stickler for order, rule of law and professionalism, by Social Protection Minister Volda Lawrence.

Mr. Hoyte passed away in 2002 at age 73 from heart failure.
