    The Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) got its 2017 calendar up and running with its first cross country of the new season on Tuesday at the National Park.

    Ricky Williams of Region One (Barima/Waini) was impressive with a comfortable win in the Boys Under-20, 5.2 kilometres race, winning the event in a time of 14 minutes, 35 seconds.

    The talented distance athlete outlasted Ranaldo Wishart, who clocked 15 minutes, 37 seconds for second and Christopher Dharry, who finished in third with a time of 19 minutes, 35 seconds.

    Toyan Raymond won the female equivalent in 20 minutes, 28 seconds, topping Leyanna Charles, who clocked 22 minutes, 15 seconds.

    Matthew McKenzie won the senior category with the distance set at 7.8 kilometres. McKenzie won the event in 26 minutes, 20 seconds to finish ahead of Jonathon Fagundes, who finished second in 26 minutes, 42 seconds and Anfernee Headecker, who clocked 27 minutes, 48 seconds.

    Winning the female senior category was Claudrice McKoy in a time of 31 minutes, 57 seconds; Assata Eastman finished in second in 32 minutes, 45 seconds.

    Nicholas Daw won the Male Under-16, 2.6 kilometres race, while Kellannie Glen won the female version of the event.

    The AAG will host its next cross country event on January 8 in the mining town of Linden.
