Food & Drug department warns against purchasing of items without manufacturer details

The Government Analyst- Food and Drug Department (GA-FDD) on Tuesday issued an advisory against the purchasing of substandard food, drug, cosmetics and medical devices that are traded on the local market.

Director Food and Drug Department, Marlon Cole said the advisory was deemed necessary following the discovery of a developing pattern where the exact name & address of manufacturers and the country of origin on the label of substandard products are being deliberately withheld from consumers.

“The Department has been consistently encountering imported items where the Name and Address of the Manufacturer are not stated and in some cases, the country of origin is unknown. There are also some cases where only a website and/or a third party retailer is stated on the labels.”

This is contrary to Label requirement in Regulation 18 of the Food and Drug Regulations.

While he said the department will be enforcing its legislations by refusing entry of these items, some of it is already being smuggled into the country.
