With Smart City Solutions finally given the green light, on Tuesday teachers and all Citizens will have to pay for parking in central Georgetown for the first time. The Teachers Union and the company, Smart City Solutions (SCS) would have met but are yet to decide if and when teachers could pay a lower parking fee.

SCS PR Consultant, Kit Nascimento confirmed on Monday afternoon that the Communities Minister signed off City bylaws to facilitate the project.

He made these comment moments after meeting with a team at the Guyana Teachers Union (GTU) on the effects the project would have on teachers.  However, a decision is yet to be made whether the parking fee of teachers will be lessened or wavered by the company.

GTU’s General Secretary Coretta McDonald said the body is pleased that the company has seen it fit to hear the concerns of the Union.

The Company’s Spokesman and the Company’s Global Head of Business Development, Amir Oren told News Room that the company is seeking mutually agreeable results that will benefit both parties.

The Company’s Global Head of Business Development said the project took quite some time to get going. He feels there were elements of delay but those delays were able to produce benefits.

Smart City Solutions on January 24 will officially begin charging citizens to park within the areas of Camp to Water Streets and from Quamina to Hadfield Streets.

The parking meters will only be using a prepaid card system and can be found at various retailers most of whom are phone card vendors.
