Tuschen fire leaves nine homeless

A family of six and another family of three are now homeless, after the place they called home went up in flames earlier today (Wednesday, March 15, 2017). The house is being rented to the families.

The fire started in the back room of the upper flat of a two storied house located at Lot 37 Old Road, Tuschen Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo (EBE).

Of the nine persons, there are six children and three adults.

Luanna Weeks, a single mother of four who resided in the upper flat, says she was washing when the fire started at approximately 09:00 hrs. The woman said after the fire started, she rushed upstairs to rescue her special needs son. The woman also denied claims that one of her sons started the fire.

Weeks and her children moved into the house October last year.

Shortly after the fire, residents of the community pooled resources and provided to the single mother of five children.

Meanwhile, the woman who resides in the lower flat of the home with her husband and children was too distraught to speak with the News Room.

News Room was able to confirm from the homeowner, Etwarie Singh, that the property was not insured. When she got the word about the fire she raced down to the location but by then there was nothing that could be done.

It is unclear what may have caused the fire. However, the Guyana Fire Service and the Police Force have since launched an investigation into the incident.
