Peter’s Hall, Eccles and Houston possible locations for new Demerara River crossing

The first phase of the feasibility study for the new Demerara River crossing has been completed.

Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson, along with a team from the Ministry, and General Manager of the Demerara Harbour Bridge Corporation, Mr. Rawlston Adams, today (Wednesday, March 15, 2017) met with LievenseCSO to discuss the progress report on the river crossing.

The contract for the feasibility study and design was signed on Friday, December 9, 2016, with the Dutch company. The study commenced on January 15, 2017 and will take a period of six months to be completed.

Mr. ArieMol of the Dutch company led a presentation of the concluded feasibility study.

He touched on a number of points, including river/marine traffic, river modelling, and economic and environmental considerations.

Mr. Mol also highlighted a number of possible locations for the new River Crossing, including New Hope, Peter’s Hall, Eccles, and Houston, with lengths ranging from approximately 580 metres to just under 2,000 metres.

The Ministry of Public Infrastructure said a more detailed presentation of the study is expected to be made at a later date.

Additionally, draft reports will be made to Cabinet. Subsequently, it will be open to consultation by the second week of April.

The current crossing which is 1.5 miles long was officially opened in July 1978.
