Senior promotion of teachers from grades ‘A’ and ‘B’ schools will hopefully be able to take up such positions after the Easter term. This follows a recent review of that process by the Union and Teaching Service Commission.

According to General Secretary of the Guyana Teachers Union, Coretta McDonald, the new promotions out by the end of this month. She said “we are going to have the preliminary list out where persons will look at what has happened, and if they are still queries, persons can have an opportunity to query. Coming out of that, then, we will have the final list being published.”

McDonald said the Union is pleased with the way the Teaching Service Commission (TSC) is now going about the promotion of the senior educators.

She said just about three weeks ago, “all teachers who would have applied for senior promotions, they were invited to a new interviewing process. That process would have seen several persons compiling the panel. Of course, GTU was a part of that panel.” She explained that there were two groups and GTU had representatives in both groups.

Coming out of those interviews, McDonald said it was recognised that the teachers who were called for the first time, some of them were excelled at the interviews.

According to the General Secretary when those applicants would have completed the last requirement in the form of an essay, it is then a final decision will be made on who gets promoted for the year 2015.

She said yet again the GTU will be called upon to be part of that review process, as the Union is pleased with the partnership with the TSC. This she said will see that “when teachers apply for promotions, even if they don’t get the position they would have applied fo,r or even if they are not promoted, teachers will be satisfied that the process was done and everybody treated equally, it was done very fairly.”

The Guyana Teachers Union will be putting forward several recommendations to the Commission for changes when considering the promotion of teachers. Those recommendations would include fewer years of service requirement once a teacher would have served in a deputy position along with required qualifications among several other areas.
