The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Shalimar Ali-Hack has remitted the case of Police v. Regan Rodrigues for the offence of murder to Magistrate Judy Latchman for re-opening.

Rodrigues was charged with the murder of Courtney Crum-Ewing after the gun used to commit the murder was found at his home. However, on September 14, 2016, the charge was dismissed following a no-case submission which was filed by his lawyer, Adrian Thompson. Magistrate Latchman who presided over the case noted that while she was satisfied that the gun was found at the home of the accused, the evidence provided by the prosecution did not implicate Rodrigues in the actual murder.

Crum-Ewing, a father of three, was gunned down on March 10, 2015, while he was urging persons to come out and vote for the 2015 General and Regional Elections, using his bullhorn.

According to a statement today (Friday, March 17, 2017) from the DPP’s Chambers, the sole purpose of this remit is to take further evidence from police witnesses and to rule on the voluntariness of all oral statements of the accused.

The matter will be prosecuted by Special Prosecutor Attorney-at-Law Mr. Nigel Hughes.

Earlier this month, in observance of his second death anniversary, the family of Crum-Ewing hosted yet another picket calling for justice.

The persons gathered in front of the Office of the Attorney General, a spot where Crum-Ewing previously stood to protest, demanding the resignation of Former Attorney General, Anil Nandlall. Nandlall was involved in a scandal after a telephone conversation of himself and Kaieteur News reporter Leonard Gildarie was published.
