The By-laws governing the parking meter project in the Capital have been suspended. The announcement was made late this evening by Acting Mayor, Sherod Duncan on Facebook.

The Order which was signed today (Friday, March 17, 2017) by Minister of Communities, Ronald Bulkan suspends the By-laws for three months effective today.

Duncan’s Facebook statement reads “The Government has moved to suspend By-Laws No. 1 of 2017 – Georgetown Metered Parking By-Laws, which facilitates the metered parking system. The “Order” by the Minister of Communities Ronald Balkan will be shortly gazetted.”

The Georgetown Council will now have to deliberate on the matter at an extraordinary meeting which Duncan as Acting Mayor has to call.

The suspension order as shared by Duncan, also declares that “the Mayor and City Councillors of the City of Georgetown are in default of their functions with respect to the Georgetown Metered Parking By-laws” giving cause for the directive from Minister Bulkan.

These By-laws are also currently engaging the attention of the High Court in an action filed on behalf of the New Building Society Limited.
