The Indian Action Committee (IAC) wishes to inform the general public of and invite them to the organization’s 14th Annual Grand Cultural Melas to commemorate the 179th Anniversary of the arrival of East Indians to Guyana.

The Essequibo Mela is scheduled for Sunday, April 30, 2017, commencing at 16:00hrs (4 pm), at the Anna Regina Community Centre Ground, Region No. 2; and the Berbice event will be held on Friday, May 5, 2017, a national holiday, at the Albion Sports Complex, Region No. 6, commencing at 16:00hrs (4 pm).

These activities are also part of the overall centenary commemorations of the ending of emigration of indentured labourers from India, and the arrival of the last Coolie Ship s.s. Ganges with the last batch of indentured labourers.

The IAC, which was established in 2003 to preserve and promote Indian culture, is confident that the Melas will be attended, as in the past, by large disciplined crowds.

The cultural programs will include traditional Indian dances; features from Guyanese artistes; singers and musicians in addition to food, games and other attractions.

Live music and entertainment will be provided by Dak’s New Generation Band; there will be members of the Guyana Police Force to provide security, admission is free, and no alcohol allowed.
