EasySky granted permission for monitored flights; Stranded passengers being transported

EasySky has been granted permission from the Guyana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) to operate strictly monitored flights out of Guyana to ensure that passengers stranded at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) return to their destinations safely.

The Ministry of Public Infrastructure in a statement on Wednesday evening (April 26, 2017) noted that two flights departed Guyana on Wednesday evening (April 26) and another two are scheduled for tomorrow (Thursday, April 27).

The GCAA is working closely along with the local ground handling agent, Roraima Airways, to ensure the passengers depart from Guyana as soon as possible. The two bodies are also working together to ensure that passengers receive accommodation as they await departure.

However, it must be noted that a number of passengers have instead opted to camp out at the airport as they await a flight out of Guyana.

Easy Sky has been cooperating and a schedule for flights has been outlined. This schedule will see a number of flights departing Guyana over the next few days. Additionally, all continuing flights will receive oversight from GCAA.

“In fact, GCAA has met with Easy Sky representatives every day since operations were suspended. Furthermore, as part of its oversight system, the GCAA has stationed its safety inspectors at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) to monitor every Easy Sky flight,” the statement affirmed.

The operations of Easy Sky airline were suspended on April 21, 2017, after safety deficiencies were uncovered following oversight inspections conducted by the GCAA. This led to close to 200 Cubans, most of whom were in Guyana for shopping, being left stranded at the airport.

However, these short-term safety deficiencies were subsequently addressed, thus allowing for continued monitored flights by Easy Sky.
