Gov’t investing $70,000 US for study on use of natural gas for electricity generation

As Guyana prepares for the Oil and Gas Sector, the Government is investing 70 thousand US dollars for a consultancy firm to conduct a desk study on utilizing natural gas for electricity generation.

The study would be conducted by the consulting company, Energy Narrative.

The options, cost, economics, impact and key considerations of transporting and utilizing natural gas from offshore Guyana for electricity generation would be examined.

The proposal was presented to the cabinet on Tuesday last by Public Infrastructure Minister, David Patterson.

Minister Harmon said the study was expected to commence this month and would last for a period of eight weeks.

US oil giant ExxonMobil had confirmed that there is sufficient natural gas in the reserves to supply some 200-megawatt electricity plant.

This would mean that the establishment of an alumina plant would once again become feasible. The government had undertaken to independently verify this.
