George grabs gold at SA Seniors despite lack of support

Guyanese athletes continue to excel despite the odds, this time Olympian Winston George winning gold at the South American Senior Championship in Paraguay.  

This latest performance by a Guyanese athlete comes in the wake of the lack of support from the government for both the Carifta and South American Junior team events, as well as the Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) lack of senior development. George clocked 45.42s for the gold, which is a few one hundreds of a second off his Guyana national record of 45.25s. 

The quarter-miler specialist ran one of his better races for the year and is surely running himself into 400m form ahead of the World Championship, which is set for London in August. 

However, George had to pay his own way to Paraguay because of AAG’s debt incurred by hosting the South American Junior Championship, which was highly successful for the host nation.
