Pupils across the country sat the 2017 National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) on Wednesday, April 12 and Thursday, April 13, 2017.

The Ministry of Education has disclosed that the results of the assessment which is designed to determine where pupils are likely to undertake their secondary education, will be officially announced tomorrow (Friday, June 30, 2017).

Over 13,000 students sat this year’s assessment.

According to reports, the Education sector has seen an improvement in the performance of Mathematics.

Performance in Mathematics and Science in 2016 fell below that of previous years.  Subsequently, the Education Ministry crafted a plan to improve performance.

Minister of State, Joseph Harmon had announced that government was spending some $48M for the emergency intervention to strengthen the teaching capacity of Mathematics at the Grade 6 level in public schools.

The plan followed recommendations from the Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) which was contracted to conduct the examination for the students.

The recommendations include the training of teachers in content and methodology; facilitating fortnightly cluster meetings in all regions; the recruitment of Mathematics coordinators and monitors; the training of officers and school administrators to supervise the teaching of Mathematics; the preparing and administering a diagnostic assessment of pupils in the hinterland regions before training; the enhancement of public relations, parental involvement in the education of the children and the acquisition of support material for the students.

In 2016, Mae’s Under 12; Anthony Ferreira along with Dharmic Rama Krishna’s Aryan Singh copped top places with a tie at 568 marks at the NGSA. This was followed by Serena Razack of Graham’s Hall Primary School with 565 marks.
