GuySuCo encourages attendance as second crop begins

The Guyana Sugar Corporation Inc. (GuySuCo) harvesters to turn out to work and ensure that their estates harvest all of the sugar canes in the cultivations as the sugar industry commence its second crop for 2017.

In a statement to the media, it was disclosed that the Blairmont Estate was the first to start grinding on 17th July, followed by Rose Hall on 27th July and Albion on 5th August 2017.

The Skeldon, East Demerara and Uitvlugt Estates (Factories) will commence their crop by the first week of September 2017.

Sugar Production for the Crop–to- date 11th August is 5,725 tonnes while the total for the year-to-date is 55,331 tonnes. The target for the Second Crop is 124,844 tonnes.

The average harvesters’ attendance for this week at the three estates that are currently grinding is as follows: Albion 59%, Rose Hall 67% and Blairmont 64%, hence the industry’s average for the week is 63%, the Corporation said.

The Corporation is also appealing to residents in communities around estates to encourage employees particularly harvesters and planters to turn out to work.

Following an announcement of the closure of various sugar estates across the country, the industry has been plagued by a strikes and protest actions.
