Sixteen Guyanese were this year granted scholarships to the United Kingdom to pursue studies in various fields, under the Chevening scholarship programme.

Chevening Scholarships in Guyana are awarded to outstanding emerging leaders to pursue one-year Master’s at any UK university. This year’s scholarship represents a $102M investment, according to the British High Commissioner, Gregory Quinn.

The scholars will be studying for postgraduate qualifications in a variety of topics including: public policy, renewable energy, energy studies, global health, petroleum and energy economics, anthropology and environment, transport planning, innovation management, environmental engineering, development finance, agriculture and communications.

The aim of the scholarships is to give persons the opportunity to complete studies which they can use to develop their own country. A past student who benefited from the Chevening Scholarship programme in 2012 urged the beneficiaries to make the best of the year ahead.

Chuizka Harilal, Chevening Alumni charged that, “upon your return to Guyana, I urge you to remember one of the most important reasons why you were awarded the scholarship—that is your drive and eagerness to contribute to society and the development of our beloved country. With your new found skills and perspectives, you would be in a much better position to advance Guyana in your respective fields and contribute to progress at national and international levels.”

Those awarded scholarships this year are; Kayla Defreitas, Sanasha Perreira, Jason Fraser, Rovin Sukhraj, Tiffany Daniels, Darcy Waldron, Michael Fraser, Lidon Charles, Gopnauth Gossai, Tricia, Teekah, Joel Joseph, Jacqueline Major, Dillon Clarke and Jonathan Melville.

The High Commissioner encouraged others to apply for the scholarship for next year’s programme which is currently open. Details of the scholarship are available at www.chevening.org.uk.
