UG to receive radio license

The University of Guyana’s Centre for Communication Studies will soon be broadcasting live on radio to not only the University’s campus but surrounding communities.

The tertiary institution will be receiving its radio license and a new transmitter in January of the New year and is expecting to begin broadcasting from March 2018. The proposed name for the station is ‘Golden Arrow Community Broadcasting System’, however, a competition will be launched soon to come up with a final name.

The license and other equipment valuing some US$79,000, which includes a new transmitter, will provide practical training for students of the Centre for Communications Studies. According to the Centre, this investment will not only provide training for students but also non-enrolled broadcasters in Guyana and will provide community education, teaching and learning; covering a wide area of history, entertainment and current affairs.

The University has always been in the possession of a radio license until 1990 when its request for a renewal was not granted.

An application was made for Television license was also made and commitment was made from the Guyana National Broadcasting Authority (GNBA) and the Public Telecommunications Ministry, to make it a reality.
