Residents of Orealla will soon benefit from the village’s first radio station.

Minister of Social Cohesion, with the responsibility of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr George Norton, with the help of Toshao of Orealla and Siparuta, David Henry on Saturday turned the sod at the site earmarked for the radio station.

Minister Norton, who visited the East Berbice-Corentyne (Region Six) communities to participate in the annual Heritage Day activities, said that the sod-turning ceremony is a clear indication that all Guyanese will continue to benefit from the national development plans.

“This shows that you are not being left out and I want the young people to use this as an opportunity…for employment,” he said.

Dr Norton also said that there are numerous benefits to be accrued when Radio Orealla is implemented and he encouraged the villagers to see it as a means of not only keeping up-to-date with current affairs but for business and educational purposes as well.

“For villagers it is a means [by] which you can advertise your business and most of all I want it for the promotion of your language and of course your different activities,” he said.

Regional Executive Officer of the Regional Democratic Council, Kim William-Stephen expressed similar sentiments, noting that the radio station will allow the villagers to hear first-hand about the different programmes that the Government is implementing, from which they can benefit.

“This [Radio Orealla] is to let you know of the administration’s and the Government of Guyana’s commitment to ensuring that everyone enjoys a good life and so that you will be able to communicate to all the regions and the world at large,” she said. (Ministry of the Presidency)
