Priyanna Ramdhani, the youngest athlete on the Guyana team at the South American Youth Games, won her second game in Group B action by defeating Michaela Skaric of Chile. The 15-year-old won 21-17, 21-14 to book a place in the quarter-finals of the 14-country championship.

“She not only was up against cold conditions of 11 degrees, but also to the support of the Chilean fans backing the Chile player,” according to news out of Chile.

With the win, Priyanna is now ranked number four in South America. “A great achievement for a 15-year-old,” the Guyana Badminton Association said in a release.

Priyanna previously lost to the number one seed in the group, Micaela Flores of Chile 21-9, 21-16, before rebounding to beat Suriname’s Erisa Bleau 21-4, 21-8 in her second match.

Priyanna and her Mixed Doubles partner Tyrese Jeffrey also played in Group C Mixed Doubles Round-Robin, winning against Panama’s Francisco Hau and Nathalie Fedney: 21-6, 21-13. They however, lost their other two matches against Chile’s Alonso Medel and Mickaela Skaric 21-12, 21-12 and Brazil’s William Guimaraes and Sania Passos. 21-5, 21-11.

The tournament continues for Priyanna on Friday (October 6) where she will be playing to get into the medal rounds.

The tournament is being played off in the Group Playoffs, Quarter-finals, Semi-finals and Final format. There are four groups, with the top two winners in the group moving to the Quarter-Finals where the knockout system leading to the final will come into effect.
