A former student of School of the Nations has broken her silence about a sexual proposal made to her by a teacher who is under investigation for having sex with his students.

Melissa Atwell was 17-years-old at the time when the teacher, who is currently stationed at Bishops’ High School, invited her to his house on Durban Street, Georgetown and made a sexual proposal to her in exchange for exam questions in advance.

Atwell, who is now in her early 30s, told News Room that after she refused the teacher’s advances, he then proposed that they enter a “relationship” and that no one has to know.

“I said no…then he was like well I have to pay for my lessons because is business now. I was like fine no problem. I never went back. I dropped his subject,” Atwell told News Room.

Atwell recalled that the teacher has a computer desk in the upper flat of his house with two chairs, facing each other where he would have “one on one” meetings with students.

According to the young woman, she did not realise that it was the same teacher who is under investigation until she saw an old photo of him circulating on Facebook.

News Room first reported on Monday that the Ministry of Education is investigating the 39-year-old teacher, following a complaint filed against him by Cultural Policy Advisor at the Ministry of Social Cohesion, Ruel Johnson.

News Room understands that the 39-year-old teacher in question has been in the profession since he was 19-years-old; however, most of his alleged victims are from the Bishops’ High School, where he has been employed for the last ten years.

In the letter of complaint, Johnson detailed numerous reports he received from present and past students of the teacher, who allegedly sexualized his lessons, had inappropriate conversations with female students and engaged in multiple sexual relationships with female students. Johnson has so far compiled a list of approximately 30 victims.
