A grieving family is demanding justice for their 32-year-old son who was chopped to death in the presence of his father during a confrontation with a known troublemaker in their hometown of Cane Grove, East Coast Demerara (ECD) on October 15, 2017.

The family, in an interview with News Room, claimed that the suspect was released on bail and is threatening to kill them.

Harrynarine Ramnawaj was chopped about his body after he and his father confronted a man who was destroying crops they have been planting on government reserves for over 20 years.

The victim’s father, Chandrapaul survived the attack though he lost two fingers. The man said his son died in less than 15 minutes of being brutalized by the suspect.

“Me feel, me can’t really say how me feel cause me finger chop out and me nah know what fah do. Like me get stupid, me nah know what fah do,” the father expressed.

The sister, Kavita Birpal explained that the family was not present at the first court hearing and so they were not informed of the court date.

Birpal explained that her brother’s funeral was on October 22, 2017 and the court case was called the next day but no one in the family was informed. She said her husband noticed that the suspect was roaming the village and when the family went to the police station to enquire why he is not behind bars, they were informed that he was released on bail.

Kavita said she feels unsafe in her village with her brother’s alleged killer, not behind bars.

In fact, she said the suspect would often ride by her house and in one instance, he threatened to kill her.

Her mother, Satti has similar fears. “These people deh on the road and (are) walking and they can kill people.”

Satti said her son was a “good boy” and it aches her badly that he was taken from her in such a brutal manner.

Harrynarine was the father of a four-year-old son. The next court day is December 1, 2017 and the family is hoping for a swift trial so that justice can be served.
