The Village council of Amerindian Village in Region seven, Chinoweng on Thursday signed an agreement with the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) which will see some 375 residents of that village given access to potable water for the first time.

GWI in a statement said the agreement was signed in Bartica by GWI Managing Director, Dr. Richard Van West-Charles; Executive Director of Corporate Services, Mr. Nigel Niles and Chinoweng Toshao, Mr. Roger Roland in the presence of Regional Chairman, Gordon Bradford.

Under the agreement, the sum of $6M will be spent by GWI for the procurement of materials for the construction of a catchment and a trestle for storage tanks, the installation of pipe network and stand pipes and the installation of a Photovoltaic system, the water company said.

Additionally, the sum of $5M will be paid to the Chinowieng Village council for the execution of those works with the main focus being the supply of water to schools, health centers, Teachers quarters and government buildings within the village.

The works are expected to commence in April and will last for two months.

GWI said upon completion of the project, all the residents within the project area will receive potable water via stand pipes.

Customers will be experiencing a minimum of 6 hours of service via a solar water system.

The village currently receives water from nearby creeks and rain water harvesting which are both difficult during the prolonged dry season.
