Under new management, Guyana Premier, the Miss Earth Guyana pageant is looking to make a difference this year, not only on the international stage but also to bring to awareness to several environmental issues facing Guyana.

The delegates on Sunday completed their swimsuit shoot at Fort Island, Essequibo River, where News Room caught up with Managing Director Dr Omesh Balmacoon.

This year’s pageant has seven contestants vying for the crown.

Dr Balmacoon related that one of the highlights of the pageant is the ‘Beauty for a cause’ segment where the contestants are required to propose environmental projects which are feasible and will benefit Guyanese.

“Each of the delegates, they have to make proposals as to what section of the environment they’ll be working with and how they can bring about positive change, calling to action persons to help as well and some of the areas that some of the girls are looking at are; recycling, proper garbage disposal, cleaning up of beaches and mangrove restoration projects, among others,” he outlined.

He added that upon completion of the ‘Beauty for a cause’ segment, the girls will be required to see the winning project to the end.

“It’s not just about going up to represent Guyana on the international stage, it’s also about doing something more. So even after we would have crowned the winner, and we have four other elements; Miss Earth Water, Miss Earth Air and Miss Earth Fire –they are going to go all over the country and bring awareness and actually using their opportunities, put one of their projects to action,” the Managing Director told News Room.

The Miss Earth Guyana pageant was launched on January 26, 2018, at the Roraima Duke Lodge, Kingston, Georgetown.

According to the Managing Director, they are hoping to host the pageant in the first two weeks of June. The international pageant is set for October.

Miss Earth is an annual international environmental-themed beauty pageant promoting environmental awareness.
