Days after 56-year-old Peter Jansen allegedly stabbed and killed a suspected bandit who tried to steal his caged bird, he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court on Monday, charged with Manslaughter.

Jansen, a construction worker, appeared before Chief Magistrate, Ann McLennan and was not required to plea to the charge which alleged that on May 1, 2018, at Sophia he unlawfully killed 21-year-old Shelton Jordan known as ‘Yankee’ of West La Penitence.

His lawyer, Latchmi Rahamat, in her bail application, told the Court that he was the victim of a robbery and acted in self-defence.

The Attorney reported that her client was chased through the streets of Sophia by the accused, who was armed with a knife. The Court heard that Jansen managed to disarm Jordan and stabbed him with the said knife.

Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield did not object to bail but requested that the defendant lodge his passport at the Court.

The Chief Magistrate released Jansen on $250,000 bail and adjourned the matter to May 28.
