Taxi driver, mechanic charged for collecting stolen car

Four days after a stolen Toyota Allion motorcar was recovered at Airy Hall, Essequibo Coast, two men were on Monday charged with receiving stolen property.

Taxi driver Mohadeo Lall, 30, and auto mechanic Munish Persaud, 27, both of Essequibo Coast, appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court and denied the charge.

Police alleged that the two men, on March 30, 2018 at Princes Street, Georgetown, received the Toyota Allion motor car valued $2.2M from Earland Angus while knowing that the car was either stolen or unlawfully obtained.

Police Prosecutor Arwin Moore told the court that the car was stolen by Angus and was taken to Persaud’s workshop to be tinted.

However, it is alleged that Persaud gave Lall the car to operate as a taxi and received $18,000 weekly.

The Police prosecutor did not object to bail and the Magistrate granted bail in the sum of $200,000 each. The matter was adjourned until June 4.

Last week, Earland appeared before Magistrates Fabayo Azore and was charged with the robbery committed on Pickett.

The charge stated that on March 14, at Princess Street, Angus while being in the company of others and armed with a gun, robbed Anthony Pickett of a Toyota car, valued at $2.2 million, a $35,000 LG phone, and $7,000 in cash. Angus denied the allegation.

He was remanded to prison until May 30 after denying the charge.
