Guyanese top performer to study biochemistry in Canada

Vamanadev Hiralall, who emerged as the top performer at the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations (CAPE) last year, has earned the prestigious Pearson Scholarship and will pursue studies in biochemistry at the University of Toronto, Canada.

According to the University, the Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship was created for exceptional students from around the world to study at the University of Toronto.

Hiralall, who attended the privately-run Saraswati Vidya Niketan (SVN), gained 13 Grade One and three Grade Two passes at CAPE. In 2015, he was named the Top 2 performer at the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) exam, at which he secured 19 Grade One passes and one Grade Two pass. He was also a student of SVN at that time.

The University of Toronto noted that Hiralall is mindful of the well-being of communities and has participated in a number of voluntary activities including the SEVAK Health Project and science laboratory design projects.

“He wants his academic commitment and dedication to be beneficial to not only a group of people but to humanity as a whole,” the University said in announcing the scholarship awards for this year.

“As such, being mindful of his experience and competencies, he sees basing his studies in biochemistry as a part of a larger, long-term goal of combating disease, which is a threat to us all,” the University added.
