A homeowner of 6th Avenue Diamond/Grove Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara (EBD) is counting his losses after an explosion occurred in his yard late Thursday night.

News Room understands that the owner was digging a private well.

It is currently uncertain the nature of the substance that erupted but it is suspected to be natural gas.

Commander Leslie James said he is aware of the situation but he is uncertain of the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The incident is reminiscent of one that occurred almost a decade ago when the natural gas exploded at a house located at Second Bridge, Grove, a short distance away.

In that situation, the homeowner was drilling his private well when substances, consisting of water and rocks, exploded as high as 40 feet in the air.

News Room understands that the incident Thursday night is just as destructive as that which occurred in March 2009.

The Department of Public Information (DPI) reports that CDC Director General Lt Col Kester Craig, police and fire service are on the scene.

EPA technical personnel are on their way.

All residents said to be safe and the yard has been cordoned off and is being monitored by the authorities. The situation at the moment is that the eruption is active and a slushy type mud and what appears to be fumes are active.

News Room will provide more details as it becomes available.
