Beyonce Ross, the 15-year-old triple gold medalist, was laid to rest today at the Rose Hall Town Cemetery following a service attended by hundreds at the Area – H Ground in Rose Hall.

Government officials, athletic friends, teachers, fellow classmates and residents joined the Ross family to bid their final farewell to the sports hero.

Minister of Social Cohesion with responsibility for sports, Dr George Norton, during a brief address, said Beyonce will always be remembered for her talent, dedication and the sportsmanship she displayed.

“Today we bid farewell to a talented daughter of this region of Guyana to a winner to a Champion…

“She was a gifted young lady with tremendous potential, who despite her illness, was brave in the fight against her illness. Despite all she faced, she never lost hope with her jovial spirit she persevered as the true champion she was,” Dr Norton said.

He told the parents to take comfort in the fact that she departed making a mark.

Jamal Ross said the family would like to establish a foundation in memory of his sister. In this regard, he called on the Government officials present to assist in ensuring the foundation becomes a reality.

“I wouldn’t like this to happen to anyone else. We want her memories to live on,” young Ross said.

Meanwhile, her fellow teammates from the National School Championship were decked out in their yellow and green tracksuit as they took turns of four to stand guard at her casket throughout the service.

Many persons at the service described her as always willing, smart, mannerly and one who wore the brightest smile.

Beyonce was diagnosed with a brain tumor in early March and subsequently died on June 11, 2018.

She fell into a state of unconsciousness after suffering from a seizure but she never woke up at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

She passed shortly after discovering that the brain tumor was not cancerous, shattering hopes of a successful surgery and eventual recovery.

Beyonce had won three gold medals at the National Cycling Championships in October 2017. She had hopes of being an Olympian for Guyana.
