Minister of Education, Nicolette Henry has expressed gratitude to those parents who sent their children to school despite the nationwide strike and protest actions by the Guyana Teachers Union (GTU).

She thanked the parents during interactions with them when she visited a number of schools in Region Six, East Berbice Corentyne, a statement from the Ministry noted.

Henry, along with the Chief Education Officer (CEO), Marcel Hutson and other officials visited schools across the country as part of “traditional visits” conducted on the first day of the new school term.

According to the statement, the Education Minister also thanked those Head Teachers, Teachers and trainee Teachers who ignored the strike action and turned up for work.

The schools visited by the Minister were Edinburgh Primary School, Overwinning Primary School, Tutorial Secondary School, New Amsterdam Multilateral School, Savannah Park Nursery School, Berbice Educational Institute, Vryman’s Erven Secondary School, Berbice High School, Canje Secondary School, J.C Chandisingh Secondary School, Port Mourant Secondary School, Corentyne Comprehensive High School, Manchester Secondary School and Skeldon Line Path Secondary.

The Ministry’s statement did not make mention of those schools which were affected by the countrywide strike action by Teachers.

Minister Henry meets with parents in Region Six.

Instead, it noted that students of the West Demerara Secondary School in Region Three “turned out in their numbers this morning, while parents ensured that their children were settled in on the first day back at school”.

The Ministry will be hosting a press conference at 20:00hrs tonight to address the issue.
