Minister of Natural Resources Raphael Trotman Saturday visited Kwakwani, Region Ten (Upper Demerara Berbice) to inspect the ongoing works on the Linden/Ituni/Kwakwani road.

In May 2018, the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GFMC) through the Ministry of Natural Resources awarded contracts for the repairs to the road at a cost of $239.7M.

The works include ditching, excavating, section repairs of soft spots and filling with laterite.

A statement from the Ministry explained that previously, the journey from Linden to Kwakwani took two to five hours but now, it takes roughly one hour.

“Minister Trotman noted his satisfaction with the works done so far, while residents also expressed same, thanking the Ministry for its support towards the community,” the statement noted.

Minister Trotman also undertook to facilitate the rehabilitation and refurbishing of the Workers Club in Kwakwani, the statement noted.

The Workers Club is said to have been established since the 1950’s and currently needs major upgrades.

Upon inspection, the Minister and staff concluded that the agreed works to be done would include the changing of the floorboards, fixture to the roof, windows, doors, pavilion, male and female sanitary areas, bar and kitchen areas along with an overall facelift of the building.

Minister Trotman is quoted as saying: “this is a long overdue promise, and we’re here to begin its fulfilment. We want to brighten this club and make it user-friendly so that it can cater for various community activities.”

The Ministry said rehabilitation works will begin upon the submission and deliberation of a drafted plan for the club.

The Minister also took the time after inspection to donate school supplies to children of the community. He then paid a visit to the Guyana Forestry Commission’s Kwakwani Forest Station where he was briefed on their operations, and some of their major needs.

Minister Trotman encouraged them to continue working diligently and offered his assistance based on their efforts towards their work and maintaining their work environs.
