High possibility of thunderstorms, high winds Wednesday – CDC

The Civil Defence Commission (CDC) is monitoring Tropical Depression Kirk which is expected to become a Tropical Storm within the day and pass close to Guyana’s coast on Wednesday, September 26.

Director-General (ag) of the CDC, Lieutenant Colonel Kester Craig on Monday morning said there is a high possibility of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and high winds. He noted that residents living in communities along the coast are asked to take all necessary precautions.

The CDC and the Hyrdomet Services are monitoring the system and will provide updates, he added.

Tropical Depression Kirk reached tropical storm-strength Saturday and was cruising west at about 21 mph, the National Hurricane Center said Sunday at 11 p.m.

Kirk was packing sustained winds of almost 35 mph and its westward motion was expected to accelerate through Tuesday.

Kirk should strengthen but remain a Tropical Storm through midweek, when it’s likely to run into strong wind shear, causing the storm to weaken as it approaches the Lesser Antilles, the Hurricane Center said.
