ECD Supermarket caught selling expired goods

The Government Analyst –Food and Drug Department (GA-FDD) has initiated criminal proceedings against the proprietor of a recently established supermarket on the East Coast of Demerara, who was caught repackaging foods under “unsanitary conditions, selling expired foods” and also extending the expiry date on Condensed Milk.

A statement from the GA-FDD did not name the supermarket or the owner but urged consumers to pay closer attention to the expiry date on products sold on the local market, particularly those that are sold in supermarkets along the East Coast, East Bank, and West Coast Demerara areas.

The department revealed that it carried out an inspection of the supermarket on October 5 and found that 51 tins of Condensed Milk had the date marks tampered with.

The items were seized and removed from the premises.

“Consumers are again asked to ensure that all items of food have a label, is English Translated and to ensure the dates are closely examined and not altered or tampered with,” the GA-FDD advised.
