Vendors who will be temporarily relocated from the Stabroek Market Wharf to facilitate rehabilitation works are expected to pay a monthly rental fee of $6,800.

This is according to a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to be signed between the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) this week.

The vendors were slated to sign the document earlier, however, Acting Town Clerk, Sharon Harry-Munroe at a press conference on Friday last said the council was awaiting the completion of works on the plot of land located West of the Parliament Buildings before signing the agreement.

“We don’t want to have them sign today [Friday], and then when they get out there, it is not ready. That is why we’re now doing preparatory works so that as soon as they sign the MoU, those persons will be able to go out and be allocated with a location within which to erect the stall,” she explained.

The MoU will be valid for one year.

According to the document released to the media, the stallholders are to construct their own stalls with the use of wood, in accordance with specifications approved by the council. Six weeks will be given to complete each stall.

While the council will be responsible for providing bins, orderlies and security lights, the vendors will be responsible for installing and paying their own electrical lights in the fenced area.

The acting Town Clerk said the MoU was formulated after consultations with the vendors and subsequently approved by the full council.

“It’s not like the stallholders when they come, would say they do not agree. All of them would have had their input, they would have perused it, they would have agreed with it,” she told reporters.
