The official Facebook Page of the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) has been hacked, its Public Relations Department has confirmed.

A post on the tax agency’s Facebook Page went viral on Wednesday, stating that GRA has granted VAT and 30% Consumption tax for plantain chips produced locally.

But GRA has confirmed that this is not true.

This is the fake post: “The Commissioner General Godfrey Satia has given due consideration for the addition of 14% VAT and 30% Consumption tax for plantain chips produced locally so as to boost internal revenue due to the ongoing shortage of revenue in the consolidated fund. This has led to the government being unable to pay hundreds of staff their october salaries. This request has been fulfilled on the directive of His Excellency President David Granger under the Plantain Chips Initiative Act 56:01 of 2017.”

The GRA is preparing a statement on the hoax.
