President David Granger has been diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma –a type of Cancer which develops in a network of vessels and glands spread throughout the body.

According to an official statement issued by Guyana’s Ambassador to Cuba, Halim Majeed via the Ministry of the Presidency, the Head of State underwent “a surgical procedure” at the Centre for Medical, Surgical Research (CIMEQ) in Cuba on Thursday last.

The President and First Lady departed for Cuba on Tuesday, October 30, for medical reasons.

The statement from the Cuban Embassy said the President’s visit was deemed necessary because of “an unusual physical discomfort.”

Subsequent to a series of medical tests, the President was diagnosed last week and underwent surgery.

On Tuesday, November 6, he was discharged from CIMEQ and returned to his official accommodation but the Embassy noted that he has now begun the second phase of treatment today and will “likely be placed in CIMEQ for a short period of two to three days.”

During this time, President has been working and resting in accordance with the advice he has been receiving from his doctors, the statement added.

“He is in fine form and a good frame of mind. He is expected to fully recover under the supervision of his doctors,” the Cuban Embassy assured.

According to the statement, President Granger expressed gratitude to all well-wishers in Guyana and the Diaspora and to the President of Cuba and medical staff of CIMEQ.

The Embassy of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana in the Republic of Cuba will be issuing another Statement prior to the departure of the President from Cuba.
