President David Granger remains “in command” and “in charge of the business of the State” despite a reduced workload, Minister of State Joseph Harmon stated Friday.

The President is due to leave for Cuba on Tuesday to undergo further treatment after he was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma earlier this month.

The President first landed in Cuba for a medical check-up on October 30, 2018, after he experienced unusual physical discomfort.

After a series of medical tests, the diagnosis was made and he was placed in the Centro de Investigaciones Medico Quirurgicas (CIMEQ) on November 1, where he underwent a surgical procedure.

He was discharged from the hospital on November 6 and returned to Guyana on November 20, 2018, and it was announced that he would continue to undertake medical treatment in Cuba.

“The President is having meetings, giving directions and so on and so forth,” Minister Harmon said at his weekly post-Cabinet news conference.

“But he is much better than when he left for Cuba; the treatment regime would require him going to Cuba on a number of occasions,” Harmon added.

While the President handles a reduced workload, Harmon said the government continues to work assiduously in accord with the principle concerns of the President, namely the Green State Development Strategy, security of the borders and the safety and happiness of Guyana.
