Over 400 students attend 6th STEM Conference
Over 400 students from various High Schools across the country on Saturday participated in the
Sixth annual STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Conference held by the Volunteer Youth Corps Inc. in collaboration with ExxonMobil Guyana at the Ramada Georgetown Princess Hotel.
The conference included a robotics short programming course, demonstration and competition; interactive science experiment coaching and demonstrations; and career guidance.
Deedra Moe, Public and Government Affairs Manager, ExxonMobil Guyana said the company is proud to support programs that help educators enhance their teaching skills and motivate students to pursue careers in Math and Science.
“Education is the fundamental building block of individual opportunity and economic growth, and STEM skills in particular, are critical to ensuring today’s students are prepared for the jobs of the 21st century,” she was quoted as saying in a statement.
CEO Volunteer Youth Corps, Goldie Scott said the conference aims to ensure that students across the various high schools understand the importance of Math and Technology in efforts to gear up for future opportunities in Guyana, according to the statement.
The agenda included presentations from Doug McGehee, Geoscience Manager, ExxonMobil Guyana; Dr. Astell Collins, Assistant to Minister of State, Ministry of the Presidency; Patrick Chinedu Onwuzirike, Assistant Chief Education Officer (Technical) Ministry of Education; and other Professionals within the Oil and Gas, Technology, Business and Engineering sectors.
Since 2012, the Volunteer Youth Corps Inc. has been partnering with ExxonMobil Guyana to implement STEM Education in schools. One of the initiatives implemented engages third and fourth form students in a variety of STEM after-school learning programs in Georgetown.
The programs include practical lessons in physics; chemistry; integrated science and information technology, as well as a three-day science camp at a local environmental facility.
