Chairman of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Dr Timothy Harris, who is also the Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, will lead a delegation to meet with United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres Monday to discuss the crisis in Venezuela.

A statement from CARICOM noted that the meeting will take place at UN Headquarters in New York.

Prime Minister Harris will be accompanied by Prime Minister of Barbados Mia Mottley, Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago Keith Rowley, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Grenada Peter David, and Ambassador Irwin LaRocque, Secretary-General of CARICOM.

The statement noted that the meeting is a follow-up to the decision of CARICOM Heads of Government at their Special Emergency Meeting on Thursday last which discussed the on-going situation in Venezuela.

The CARICOM Leaders agreed to request a meeting with the UN Secretary-General which he accepted.

The BBC reported that US National Security Adviser John Bolton has warned Venezuela that any threats against American diplomats or opposition leader Juan Guaidó will be met with “a significant response”.

Mr Bolton tweeted on Sunday that any such “intimidation” would be “a grave assault on the rule of law”, the BBC reported.

His warning comes days after the US and more than 20 other countries recognised Mr Guaidó as interim president.

They accuse President Nicolás Maduro of rigging last year’s election.

According to the BBC, President Maduro was sworn in for a second term earlier this month after an election marred by an opposition boycott and allegations of vote-rigging, triggering large protests.
