Full operations have resumed at the University of Guyana Wednesday following threats that there were bombs planted on the campus Tuesday.

Police Headquarters revealed that an anonymous call was made to the Alberttown Police Station at around 12:40hrs about the alleged bombs and as such the campus was evacuated and students and staff were sent home.

An ‘all-clear’ has since been given by the Guyana Police Force Bomb Disposal Unit after an efficient search was done on the campus.

Anyone with information that can assist the police in the investigation of the threat towards the University of Guyana and other educational institutions is encouraged to contact the Safety and Security Officer on 623-9979 or the nearest police station.

A statement from the UG noted that “Police Officers and ranks from the Fire Service completed a search of buildings and surrounding areas; the search revealed no explosives of any kind nor were any suspicious packages or items located during the search. Following the thorough sweep of the campus the ‘all-clear’ was given, as a result, full operations (classes and work) will resume on Wednesday, February 6, 2019.”

According to Vice-Chancellor Ivelaw Lloyd Griffith, “the action was deemed necessary as a precaution, and out of safety concerns for the students and staff members who would use the facility during this time.”

The University Administration said they are thankful for the full cooperation of students and staff during the evacuation process.
