‘Mighty Believer’ wins Calypso Crown with ‘Guyana must be a paradise’  

The National Park Tarmac was almost filled to capacity on Friday night for the finals of the 2019 calypso competition.  

Eleven finalists competed to the delight of the crowd who cheered the well written and composed songs. 

Kenroy Fraser, who goes by the stage name, “The Mighty Believer” took the Calypso Crown with an ode to Guyana’s potential to be a prosperous nation.  

His song was entitled “Guyana Must Be a Paradise” and focused on Guyana’s value as a nation and why it was always meant to be a prosperous nation.  

Roger Anthony Hinds, better known as ‘Young Bill Rogers’ won second place with “No Third Term.”  

It was a political guided piece that imagined PPP founder Cheddi Jagan returning from the dead to discipline current PPP Leader Bharrat Jagdeo for seeking a third term at the presidency. 

Diana Chapman was awarded the third place honour for her song ‘The killing of another woman’ depicting a man on trial for killing his wife. Chapman’s song pushed the notion that a man who abuses a woman should face dire consequences.  

There was some bit of controversy over the first and second place decision based on the crowd’s initial reaction, however, most supporters seemed to quickly get over their initial feeling of outrage to embrace the spirit of unity and good sportsmanship as they threw their support behind The Mighty Believer during his winning encore performance. (Nigel Collymore)
