The Ministry of Public Telecommunication as is in the process of reaching out to five local high schools to generate enthusiasm for careers in the Information Communications Technology (ICT) sector.

The initiative is being executed with the aim of empowering the nation’s youth by awarding ten ICT scholarships to willing and deserving students. They will be trained by a reputable leading local ICT business.

Public Telecommunications Minster Cathy Hughes engaged the students of Carmel Secondary Monday seeking to enlighten them on the lucrative world of ICT.

“We have awesome opportunities coming up in Guyana; some of these faces here will become petroleum engineers, and Guyana is going to need you so I want each and every one of you to remember that your altitude is determined by your attitude.”

Rowen Willabus, owner of Intellect Storm, an IT-based solutions marketing company captured the attention of the students as he promoted the field of ICT in his own unique way.

He then went on to tell students that he was not seen as the cream of the crop after attending Queens College and did not display the traits that most of his teachers and peers could appreciate.

“I attended the Queens College Secondary School but only did seven subjects which were looked down upon,” Willabusrelated. However, he was able to work for an overseas company while in Guyana and purchase a car at age 17 as a result of developing a passion for ICT related things and using it to his advantage.

The two-week initiative is intended to allow local leading ICT private business owners and Ministry Of Education personnel to inspire high school students who they hope will go on to build the local industry.

The Carmel Secondary School was the first stop made by the travelling ICT team.

Ms. DonnellaCollison, of the Public Telecommunications Ministry, in an interview with the News Room said that the Ministry is looking to target schools that are often overlooked.
