Students questioned by Police for mixing substance in girls’ water bottles

The Ministry of Education says it is addressing an incident at the Corentyne Comprehensive High School which resulted in two female students falling ill.

In a statement on Monday, the ministry confirmed reports that the two students were taken to hospital after an unknown substance was thrown into their water bottles.

The Ministry said the students were treated and sent away and are in no present danger.

Currently, the matter is engaging the attention of the Guyana Police Force.

“The classmates who were accused of mixing the substance in the water bottles were questioned in the presence of their parents,” the Ministry said.

Additionally, the Welfare Division in Region Six is providing counselling and psychosocial support to those affected by the incident.

Reports are that 16-year-old Cynthia Saul, a fourth form student at the school and a friend are away from school suffering from pain in their stomach, head and tummy after two male classmates threw a substance in their water bottles on Friday last.

The Stabroek News reported that the boys said they threw Epsom salts in the bottles but the symptoms being experienced by the girls are not consistent with would have been experienced after consuming Epsom Salts.
