Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) is now equipped with 83 pieces of medical equipment to improve the services provided to patients in the Maternal and Child Health Unit.

On Thursday, the Ministry of Public Health donated equipment estimated at $72M. The equipment was purchased with a loan from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) to the government Under the Maternal and Child Health Improvement project.

In an interview with the Permanent Secretary for the ministry, Colette Adams, it was explained that the purpose of this contribution is to upgrade the hospital facility and to strengthen the performance at the hospital since it is the main hospital in the country. She noted that the donation would enhance the maternal health service, since other medical facilities in Guyana seek external assistance from the GPHC to deliver efficient aid to patients.

Dr. Lucio Pedro, the Consultant Obstetrician and Head of Gynecology at the unit, lauded the provision of this equipment by the government.

“It is a special day today because we have been waiting for these things for a long time. [Now] we have things like ultrasound machines, fitter monitors and better beds [for our patients]. This will come in handy for us because these materials are very important in our department,” he said.

The amount of equipment distributed to the hospital on Thursday was only the first half of the equipment to be donated. The rest is expected to be provided in 2020.
