“It’s a great privilege,” 17-year-old Jhashodra Ramnarain said when she found out on Wednesday that she topped the East Berbice- Corentyne Region at the 2019 Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) Examination.

She told the News Room that determination, commitment and faith led to her accomplishment.

“I am speechless…I want to thank Jesus, my parents, sister and my teachers for their constant encouragement and motivation,” she noted.

The soft-spoken teen of the JC Chandisingh Secondary School attained 17 subjects inclusive of 16-grade ones and one grade two.

Ramnarain said she was glued to the live broadcast of the results and was overjoyed when she heard her school was announced.

The teenager, who resides at Clifton Settlement, Corentyne Berbice, was also placed in the top ten of the country.

Ramnarain hopes to become a Lawyer and will be working towards a career in the legal field.

She will continue her studies with the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examinations (CAPE).

Her encouragement to future students sitting the examinations is to set a goal and work towards it.

“Leading up to the exams I studied late in the night, gave up most of my gadgets, put on pause on my favorite movies and didn’t go out much on weekends,” she said, adding that “It’s important to prioritize and you will see the benefits.”
