A number of students from the Soesdyke/Linden highway who performed well at national examinations were recognized and honoured at the weekend.

The Yarrowkabra and Silver Hill Community Development Council held a simple ceremony on Sunday honouring top achievers at this year’s National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) and Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations.

The students are all from communities along the Soesdyke/Linden Highway and were all presented with school supplies and electronic tablets at the Yarrowkabra Primary School.

Derryck Boyce the District Community Development Officer said they will seek to begin a scholarship programme for students who perform exceptionally well along the highway.

“To our young people here, I say listen, ask questions, keep focus, learn and contribute to your family, community and country,” Boyce said.

The top performer honoured for the NGSA examinations was Carlana Alexander from the Hairuni Primary School who gained 507 marks and will be attending St Rose’s High in September.

The 12-year-old top NGSA performer is an aspiring lawyer.

“I went to several lessons, I gave up dancing, sports; it was hard but it was worth it in the end,” Alexander said.

Far left: CSEC Top student Aliya Seecharran among other students.

She was followed by Romel Paul with 497 marks from Silver Hill Primary and Akeela Gordon from Yarrowkabra primary with 477 marks.

The other students are from Long Creek primary and Kuru Kuru Primary.

The CSEC top performer is Aliya Seeecharan from the Dora Secondary school.

“Sometimes late I night I slept so late but I kept studying,” Seecharran said.

Seecharran is advising fellow students to follow their dreams and don’t ever give up.

This was the first ceremony held in recognition of top performers at national examinations for children on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway.
