Guyana/Suriname ferry service resumes from Thursday

The Ministry of Public Infrastructure Monday announced the resumption of the Guyana/Suriname ferry service as of this Thursday.

A Guyanese vessel, the M.B. Sandaka, will operate the route.

The M.B. Sandaka will depart Moleson Creek Terminal at 09:00 hrs (Check-in: 06:30hrs to 08:00hrs) and depart South Drain- Suriname at 11:30 hrs (check-in: 08:00hrs.- 10:00hrs)- their respective local times.

The public is advised that the M.B. Sandaka cannot accommodate 20ft and 40ft containers and trucks with height and width in excess of 3 meters and 2.7 meters respectively.

The M.V. Canawaima which operated the route encountered serious mechanical issues and was shut down in late May.

The M.B. Sandaka was recently repaired and outfitted with two hydro-master propulsion systems, powered by two caterpillar 3406 engines. The acquisition and installation of the two engines cost a total of $291 million, while rehabilitation which included painting and repairs cost an additional $13 million.

The M.B. Sandaka usually worked the Parika to Leguan route.
