    A Cane Grove, Mahaica East Coast Demerara family is calling for justice after 22-year-old Hansraj ‘Kevin’ Durga was brutally beaten by three men a few weeks ago. His injuries were so severe that he is now paralyzed on the right side of the body.

    Durga also suffered memory loss while the vision in his left eye is also affected.

    The News Room visited the family at their Saywah Cane Grove home on Wednesday where the young man’s aunt, Asha Singh explained what she heard happened.

    She said Durga was trying to make peace during an argument between the three men and another relative when he was attacked on November 3 at about 22:00hrs while at a wedding house.

    “He cousin had an argument with the boys them and he [Durga] said ya’ll don’t fight, then they start to hit him on he head with a bottle.”

    The aunt said she found him in an unconscious state lying in a pool of blood. He was first taken to the Mahaicony hospital and subsequently transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he spent nine days in a critical condition.

    The incident was reported to the Cane Grove and Mahaica police stations but the family said the Police did not take any action.

    “He had a fractured skull, internal bleeding in the brain and a fractured shoulder,” Singh explained.

    As a result of his injuries, Durga is now unable to do anything for himself.

    “We want justice cause right now he can’t do anything, he just on the bed,” the aunt said.

    Before his injuries, Durga was employed as a machine operator at the Cane Grove Conservancy.

    “I am very sorry him, I don’t like seeing him in this condition cause I know he is a very strong healthy person,” the wife said.

    Durga will be starting physical therapy on November 27.

    “He needs people to help him urine, eat, drink….everything,” the wife said.

    The family wants the perpetrators to be brought to justice.
